The poet and translator David Emery Gascoyne was born Octo in Harrow, England and died Novem His early career was characterized by a precocious energy that produced two volumes of poetry (Roman Balcony and Other Poems, and Man's Life is This Meat, ), a novel (Opening Day, ) and a critical survey (A Short Survey of Surrealism, ) by the time he was . The collection passed into the hands of David Clark Madeira in the following manner. Marion Clark (), daughter of Edward, married Louis Childs Madeira () (A.B. ) and they became the parents of three children: Edward W. Madeira, Crawford Clark Madeira, and Elizabeth Madeira.   In Dunbar self-published his first collection of poems; he hand-sold every copy, and earned back his investment. Two years later, this time sponsored by white patrons, his second book, Majors and Minors, was published by a regional printer and eventually fell into the hands of William Dean Howells, the influential editor, novelist, and critic.
